HISTORY
Since 1970, Sunflower Health Foods has been serving the greater Gainesville community with pride and distinction. Health enthusiasts Rose and Howard McConnell established sunflower Health Foods in 1970 at SW 1st Ave and Main Street in downtown Gainesville. The family-run business prospered and later moved to its current location on the corner of University Ave and 34th Street in the Publix Westgate Shopping Center near the University of Florida campus.
The McConnell’s daughter Maeve and sons Kim and Gavin worked in the store while growing up, until Kim was old enough to manage the store which he did for many of the 30 years the McConnell’s owned it. They sold the business in 2001 to Jill Wilson. She and her daughter, Chantel, managed the store until January 2008 when it was sold to local entrepreneur Carol Ames.
Carol brought enthusiasm and capital to the little store and began hiring key staff to help her manage the
complex elements of the diet and nutrition business. She increased inventory and began laying the groundwork for being both the most well stocked and best-staffed health food store in Gainesville.
